We are a small operation, presently running about 60 goats. We are striving to produce a competitive percentage show goat. We learn something new everyday, and love every minute of it.
We joined the world of Boer Goats nine years ago. Though we were new to Boer Goats, we have worked in farming and breeding of animals for numerous years.
Our vision for 2007-2008 is to begin to produce flashy colored percentage show does and wethers. We are incorporating the use of Nubians for this purpose. We will see how well this works in about 2 years. Our first generation is approaching breeding age. We have used a solid red buck this year over many of our does. We are keeping our fingers crossed for reds, paints and spots! ***UPDATE We got them....solid red, solid black, flashy paints and some with spots!
We are committed to being totally honest in all of our transactions. We are Christians and we want to conduct ourselves as Christians. That doesn’t mean we won’t do something stupid at times, but we won’t be trying to be dishonest. Our percentage does are REALLY percentage animals (not fullbloods with percentage papers).
Our thanks go out to our many goat friends. Jeff and Melissa Latham of Lazy L http://www.lazylboers.com are our closest friends. Not only is Jeff a great source of information, he has been willing to share what he knows with us. Jeff has enabled us to breed to National quality animals at prices we could afford. We spend more time with the Latham family than most members of our own family. Devin, Jennifer and Becky love spending time with each other, practicing cheerleading and trying to beat each other. Tyler enjoys playing with Seth and Abby.
Pete and Beverly Warlick of Hilltop fame http://www.hilltopboers.com/index.html have been extremely helpful to us. They have supported our fledgling Heart of Alabama Boer Goat Club with their expertise and donations. They also partnered with Jeff to stand ennobled Hilltop Hurricane and other top quality animals at stud in Livingston, enabling us to breed many of our does to really outstanding animals. They even wrote a recommendation for Jennifer to go to a National 4-H Conference.
Sam and Marylou Abney www.shadylnfarm.com have been good goat show friends. It is really great to be able to spend time with people the caliber of the Abneys. They even gave us a bottle baby…. I guess they are our friends? We enjoy spending time with their kids and and grandkids, especially grandson Will.
Kim and Troy Veal http://www.vealfarms.com/ sold us our very first show goat and I still think she is the prettiest goat in the world.
There are many other goat friends that we only see a couple of times a year, or at Nationals but it seems like it was only yesterday.
As far as a registry, we are firmly committed to the American Boer Goat Association http://www.abga.org/ . We feel that they honestly represent us. Under the leadership of Pete Warlick, the A.B.G.A. has made a concerted effort to reach out to breeders outside the state of Texas. It is our opinion that the A.B.G.A. is the registry of choice.
